GEMS AND GEMOLOGY

Gemology has been a fascinating hobby of mine for over 20 years, reading up “Gemstones of the World” by Walter Schumann, attending practical classes on coloured gemstones, and visiting gem mining areas. I acquired some pieces, both priced and less well known, of various colours, shapes and cuts from gem-producing areas like Burma,Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia etc. These have since grown to quite a collection.

Among the 63 gems species are: traditional gemstones - corundum(sapphire,ruby), beryl (emerald,aquamarine), fancy diamond; and others - spinel, chrysoberyl(cat's eye,alexandrite), tanzanite, garnet(tsavorite, spessartite,), tourmaline(rubellite,indocolite), zircon, topaz, quartz(amethyst,citrine), chalcedony(agate,chrysoprase), feldspar(moonstone,labradorite), kyanite, peridot, kunsite, scapolite, flourite and many other lesser known gemstones. TOPAZ – LOVELY RANGE OF COLOURS

Topaz occurs in many different colours: colourless, yellow, orange, red brown, light to dark blue, pink-red, violet and light green. The most valuable is natural pink to reddish-orange or peach-orange (imperial or precious) stones. Blue topaz is the most popular, much of which is irradiated and heat-treat from colourless topaz. The yellow is the most common and are often heat-treated to turn it to pink. Attractive multicoloured topaz termed “mystic, rainbow, sunset” have been subjected to chemical/colour treatment. Topaz is hard (8 MOH) and usually clean and has one perfect cleavage. The name is believed to come from the Sanskrit word tapas, meaning fire. Brazil (minas Gerais) is the most important supplier but it is found in many countries including Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Germany and Russia. It is the birthstone for November.
